Setting Up A Debian Packages Proxy With apt-cacher

Setting Up A Debian Packages Proxy With apt-cacher
There are many ways to
install a Debian Linux but the most common is certainly to use the net-install 160MB CDROM. You can download it from http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/. Booting up your PC from
this CD, you will be capable of setting-up a basic Linux system;
downloading updates, extra softwares and language support directly from
the Internet. But using this method of installation on more
than one PC in your LAN results in a massive waste of your precious
bandwidth. Therefore, maybe you should consider using a
cloning utility like “Sysimager”. But, as it is most likely that every
computer will be slightly different one from another one, you should
consider setting up a Debian Package Proxy as a long term solution.

KDE 4.0 RC1+ Video Tour
View original post
I got the chance to play a little more with KDE4 since the first release candidate was announced, so I made a brief video tour of a few things that particularly interest me. You can easily get going with the openSUSE KDE Packages, KDE 4 Live CD, or the new KDE4Daily QEMU image.
KWIN Composite (the new KDE desktop effects) was the only thing that I didn’t get to demonstrate as xvidcamp/recordmydesktop completely fail if it is enabled. Nevertheless, that is certainly something to try out for yourself.
High quality mpeg (27 meg)
Things covered in this little tour:
Killer Applications
- Kickoff, new KDE Menu
- Dolphin, new File Manager
- Konqueror
- JuK, audio Player
- KDE System Settings — KControl Replacement
- Kopete
- KMplot, Kalzium, Kate
Oxygen, the beautiful style and icon theme
Plasma, with convenient/attractive widgets for your desktop

View original post
In addition to Ubuntu 6-months stable releases and the next version of ubuntu is 8.04 with Code Name “Hardy Heron” but this release will proudly wear the badge of Long Term Support (LTS) and be supported with security updates for five years on the server and three years on the desktop.
Hardy Heron was announced on Wednesday(29th August 2007) on the blog of Jono Bacon, the Ubuntu community manager for Canonical, the operating system’s commercial sponsor.
Jono Bacon about Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron)
Each new release gives us all an opportunity to shine, irrespective of which bricks in the project we are laying, and this is at the heart of our belief — working together to produce an operating system that will empower its users and shape the IT industry, putting free software at the cornerstone of our direction,” wrote Bacon. “Thousands of us get out of bed every day, united behind Ubuntu, ready to make a difference, working together to make our vision happen. Importantly, our ethos of collaboration and freedom extends to the development process as well as the end product.”

Details about Each Release
Feature Freeze
The point at which we cease creating and modifying internal features and packages. This means we’re pretty much locked down for bugfixes only.
Exceptions requiring confirmation
Packages in or relating to high-priority ReleasenameFeatureGoals
Major/minor fixes, within reason
Exceptional circumstances
Upstream Version Freeze
The point at which we cease accepting new upstream versions of packages, whether they are sourced from Debian or not. Selected Debian releases of the same upstream versions may still be pulled in for bug-fixes, but this would be a manual process.
Exceptions requiring confirmation
Packages in or relating to FeatureGoals
Minor fixes, if the upstream change is a micro-increment (or equivalent)
Major fixes, particularly blockers, if the upstream change is a minor-increment (or equivalent)
Exceptional circumstances
String Freeze
A string freeze is initiated in the project when all the human readable portions of code are no longer allowed to change. This gives the translation teams a chance to complete their translations without having to redo changed text. It also allows documentation to mention the actual UI names and messages.
Beta Freeze
Anal-retentive, high-caution period until the Beta Release goes out. Release and relevant section team confirmed fixes only! Once the BetaRelease is shipped, we roll back to FeatureFreeze status.
Exceptions requiring confirmation
ReleaseCriticalBug
SecurityCriticalBug
Exceptional circumstances
Beta Release
The BetaRelease is a testing oriented pre-release, usually one month before the Final Release.
Non Language Pack Translation Deadline
Some translation data cannot currently be updated via the language pack mechanism. Because these items require more disruptive integration work, they are subject to an earlier deadline. Translations which fall into this category are:
The Ubuntu installer
Translations which don’t use gettext, including:
Firefox
debconf templates
desktop notifications via notification-daemon
Strings visible in the default desktop (live CDs don’t get language pack updates)
Default menu items
Panel strings
All menu entries in KDE applications, which does not support translation via language packs
Kernel Freeze
The kernel freeze is a deadline for kernel updates, since they require several lockstep actions which must be folded into the CD building process. As with other freeze dates, exceptional circumstances may justify exemptions to the freeze, at the exception of the release managers.
Release Candidate (RC)
The release candidate is a production-quality pre-release one week before the final release.
Language Pack Translation Deadline
Translation data using the Language Pack mechanism is due at this deadline.
See NonLanguagePackTranslationDeadline for non Language Pack data.
Final Release
The final release is the finished product which is distributed with an official Ubuntu release number.

Howto Install Sofa Media Center in Ubuntu
View original post
Sofa is a media center aimed at easy usage, minimal configuration and total integration with the Gnome desktop environment and existing multimedia applications.
First you need to edit /etc/apt/sources.list file and add the corresponding line for your ubuntu version
sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://debian.o-hand.com dapper/
deb http://debian.o-hand.com edgy/
deb http://debian.o-hand.com feisty/
Save and exit the file.
Once the sources added, run this command to get the new packages names
sudo apt-get update
Once the update is done, run this command to install all required Clutter dependencies
sudo apt-get install libclutter-0.2-0 libclutter-0.2-dev libclutter-cairo-0.1-0 libclutter-cairo-0.1-dev libclutter-gst-0.1-0 libclutter-gst-0.1-dev
To build Sofa, you will need these packages installed, which you might already have installed if you often build software on your machine
sudo apt-get install build-essential libgconf2-dev libdbus-glib-1-dev libsigc++-2.0-dev libtool intltool libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-dev
You will first need to download the latest release from here.
In this guide, we’ll use sofa-0.2.4.tar.gz. Place it in your favourite place to work, we’ll assume it is your home directory. Use this command to decompress it.
tar xzvf sofa-0.2.4.tar.gz
You should now have a sofa-0.2.4 directory containing all the files to build Sofa. Run these three commands to build and install Sofa on your system.
./configure --prefix=/usr
make
sudo make install
Only the demo module is turned on by default. To activate other modules, you have to run sofa-config. You have to place a check in all the modules you want in the column Active.
Uninstall Soft Media Center
From the sofa-0.2.4 folder you extracted at step 5 use the following command
make uninstall
Sofa Media center Screen shots

Virtual Users And Domains With Postfix, Courier And MySQL (Ubuntu 7.10)

Virtual Users And Domains With Postfix, Courier And MySQL (Ubuntu 7.10)
This document describes how to install a mail server based on
Postfix that is based on virtual users and domains, i.e. users and
domains that are in a MySQL database. I’ll also demonstrate the
installation and configuration of Courier (Courier-POP3, Courier-IMAP),
so that Courier can authenticate against the same MySQL database
Postfix uses. The resulting Postfix server is capable of SMTP-AUTH and TLS and quota (quota is not built into Postfix by default, I’ll show how to patch your Postfix appropriately). Passwords are stored in encrypted
form in the database (most documents I found were dealing with plain
text passwords which is a security risk). In addition to that, this
tutorial covers the installation of Amavisd, SpamAssassin and ClamAV so that emails will be scanned for spam and viruses.

Howto Recover Cisco Router Password
View original post
This ‘How to’ is written to show the step by step password recovery of the Cisco Routers. It is assumed that you have a prior knowledge of what a router is and its basic function. It is also assumed the you are having some experience of configuring the router.
Please do not follow these steps if you are a new to Routers, as this can damage the IOS or any physical interface of the router.
1.Connect a computer to the router’s Console port using the Console cable that came with your router (it is usually flat and light blue).
Use these terminal settings:
* 9600 baud rate
* No parity
* 8 data bits
* 1 stop bit
* No flow control
2.Turn the router off using the power switch and turn it back on.
3.Once text starts popping up on the screen, send the break command CTRL + B or CTRL +BREAK (sometimes it is CTRL +X). This will abort the boot and present you with a rommon 1> prompt
4.From the new prompt you need to change the configuration register using the following command: confreg 0×2142
5.If you are using an older model of router you may need to enter o/r 0×2142
6.Now you need to recycle the router with the reset command.
7.If you used the o/r command then reset the router with the I command
8.Once the router finishes restarting you will find that there are no passwords to deal with, so you can enter enabled mode carte blanche.
9.Once in enabled mode enter this: copy start run. This will copy the startup config to the running config.
10.Now, go into configuration mode with the config t command
11.Once there enter the new password with the enable secret password command (i.e. enable secret admin).
12.Now set the configuration register back to normal with this command: confreg 0×2102
13.Exit config mode and enter the command copy run start to copy the new configuration to ram.
14.Now it is time to reload your router
15.Once the router is back up you need to configure all of your interfaces with the no shutdown command or they will not work.
